The beard has come back in style for men everywhere. When I was a kid you didn’t see them as much. Now, you can’t go a day without seeing a manly beard complete with stylish glasses and beanie. My husband jumped on the beard bandwagon and grew a fabulous beard. It was gorgeous but, the longer it got, the hair got drier and coarser. As well as the skin underneath, dry and coarse. That is no bueno for the wifey who wants to get close to her man.

I priced out some store-bought beard balms and they were upwards of $40,  which is crazy! Hence, why I decided to make my own. Plus, no toxins in a homemade version which means my hubby can maintain his manliness without getting toxin overload.

This homemade manly beard balm is made with simple ingredients and I believe the simpler, the better. The less chemicals the oils have to compete with, the better. Men don’t need to worry about a dry Brillo pad beard (you know, those round scrub brushes made of stainless steel). They can have a soft and supple beard you can run your fingers through. Um.......Yes, please.

Manly Beard Balm Recipe:

1/4 cup Grapeseed oil
1/2 cup raw shea butter
5 Tbsp soy wax
4 Tbsp Bourbon (optional, only if you like the smell)
10-15 drops of Cedawood (see which brand I use)

1. Combine all ingredients except Bourbon and Cedarwood essential oil.

3. Once totally melted take off heat and Cedarwood essential oil. If you like the smell of Bourbon, add that in as well. Customize the smell to your liking by adding more or less of each.

Homemade Peppermint & Rosemary Shaving Cream

Homemade Peppermin and Rosemary Shaving cream made with essential oils and shea butter

Before kids, when I could take my time in the shower, I remember purchasing the most smell-good ladies shaving cream I could find. It was pink and foamy and smelled so divine. I had one of those purple netted plastic scrunchy-thingy's, (what do you call those things?) hanging in my shower. I really felt like I was pampering myself. Sadly, it didn't take me very long to figure out that my skin would get irritated and bumpy whenever I used it. Then, I tried using my shampoo or bar soap and even just plain water. Again, my skin was left dry and bumpy. Ugh.

According to the THINK DIRTY APP, my old shaving creams rates at an 8 on the toxicity scale. Yikes! The Think Dirty App rates them on levels of toxicity from 0-10. 10 being the highest in toxicity.

Meanwhile, my husband also ditched his shaving cream he had been using for years. He would get tiny bumps on his neck and his face would get red. No wonder, his shave cream was filled with ingredients that were more irritating to his body than helpful. He opted to just using water and shaving while in the shower. Which left him dry and red.

DIY shaving cream for men sensitive skin think dirty app

Fast forward to 3 years ago when I started using essential oils for ERRYTHING!! I had already been making my own skin cream with shea butter and coconut oil, Frankincense and Lavender and it was HEAVENLY!!

I came across this shaving cream recipe by Food For Family on Pinterest and immediately knew it was doable with similar ingredients to my skin cream recipe.

For Christmas that year, I made the shaving cream for the guys in my family. I have lots of brothers, plus my dad and father-in-law. I designed some cute labels to put on top of the small mason jars. I got requests for refills, they loved it so much.

The shea butter and oils create a protective layer between the skin and the razor and leave the skin moisturized and not dry like soaps, reducing razor burns. The best part is, there's no need to wash it off. You can let it stay on your skin. Then, wash your razor in some water and a touch of castille soap.

Peppermint & Rosemary Shaving Cream

1/3 cup shea butter
1/3 cup virgin coconut oil
1/4 cup jojoba or sweet almond oil
10 drops Young Living rosemary essential oil
3-5 drops Young Living peppermint essential oil

In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the shea butter and coconut oil, stirring until just melted. Remove from the heat and transfer to a heat-safe bowl. Add in the jojoba oil and the essential oils. Stir to mix.

Place the bowl in the refrigerator and chill until solid. Remove from the refrigerator and whip using a hand beater or a stand mixer until light and fluffy. Spoon into a jar. Lid and keep in a cool, dry place.

Makes 8 ounces.
