Homemade Peppermint & Rosemary Shaving Cream

Homemade Peppermin and Rosemary Shaving cream made with essential oils and shea butter

Before kids, when I could take my time in the shower, I remember purchasing the most smell-good ladies shaving cream I could find. It was pink and foamy and smelled so divine. I had one of those purple netted plastic scrunchy-thingy's, (what do you call those things?) hanging in my shower. I really felt like I was pampering myself. Sadly, it didn't take me very long to figure out that my skin would get irritated and bumpy whenever I used it. Then, I tried using my shampoo or bar soap and even just plain water. Again, my skin was left dry and bumpy. Ugh.

According to the THINK DIRTY APP, my old shaving creams rates at an 8 on the toxicity scale. Yikes! The Think Dirty App rates them on levels of toxicity from 0-10. 10 being the highest in toxicity.

Meanwhile, my husband also ditched his shaving cream he had been using for years. He would get tiny bumps on his neck and his face would get red. No wonder, his shave cream was filled with ingredients that were more irritating to his body than helpful. He opted to just using water and shaving while in the shower. Which left him dry and red.

Fast forward to 3 years ago when I started using essential oils for ERRYTHING!! I had already been making my own skin cream with shea butter and coconut oil, Frankincense and Lavender and it was HEAVENLY!!

I came across this shaving cream recipe by Food For Family on Pinterest and immediately knew it was doable with similar ingredients to my skin cream recipe.

For Christmas that year, I made the shaving cream for the guys in my family. I have lots of brothers, plus my dad and father-in-law. I designed some cute labels to put on top of the small mason jars. I got requests for refills, they loved it so much.

The shea butter and oils create a protective layer between the skin and the razor and leave the skin moisturized and not dry like soaps, reducing razor burns. The best part is, there's no need to wash it off. You can let it stay on your skin. Then, wash your razor in some water and a touch of castille soap.

Muscle Rub Recipe You Need

Muscle rub recipe you need made with essential oils

Sore after a new workout routine? Or that kink in your neck after a night in bed with a kid that sleeps all crazy? You know what I am talking about!! Ahem!?! Foot here, a foot there, all night long!! What about that terrible position your head is in when you look at your phone forever? You're so caught up in something you forgot to move your head for an hour... or two. Ooops.

Before using essential oils, I used the muscle relaxing products from the drug store, like the one in the image below.  I had no idea that the ingredients in these products were made with synthetic ingredients, and were potentially toxic. Yikes.

One of my favorite apps to tell if a product is healthy or toxic is the Think Dirty App. You can scan your products and see how they rate. If it's between a 0-2 on the dirty meter, that is good. Anything higher and you start to wonder if the risks outweigh the benefit. Below is a brand I would have bought before. It is at a level 8 on the dirty meter. What?! That is nasty high! Big red flag NOT to buy it.

There are so many essential oils that are great for muscles, it can be overwhelming. I always recommend these 3 oils for newbies.  If you get your oils from the grocery store, beware that you probably won't see the power that you would with a highly potent brand. Not all essential oils are created equal. As someone with scoliosis, I use Young Living oils (see why I recommend them), and have seen amazing support for my muscles.

  • PanAway (a blend of oils that support bones, muscles and joints)
  • Peppermint (soothing and cooling)
  • Copaiba (Supports muscles and bones)
